This paper observes two dimensions (civic engagement and level of organisation) to report on volunteerism in civil society in several African countries, taken into account direct and indirect, organised and non-organised volunteering actions and the opportunities and challenges for expanding volunteerism on the African continent. The quantitative and qualitative analysis is based on data gathered in eight African countries in the last phase of CSI, held from 2008 to 2011: Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo and Zambia.
