This paper problematizes both conceptual and practical/functional dimensions of social justice philanthropy while paying attention to the specificity of experience in eachtransitioning country in the region. Examples provided here are not representative but illustrative and based on the author's fieldwork in three countries of the Arab Awakening; Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. This paper poses questions more than it provides conclusive answers to the state of social justice philanthropy in the Arab region; it is intended to question definitions that are taken for granted in an effort to gain a better understanding as well as advance practices of philanthropy at such a critical juncture in the region's history.
